From the Paws of Heiko – Jack Point and Biggs Park

Woof! It’s me, Heiko, your golden doodle guide to some of the best places to explore on
Vancouver Island. Today I’m taking you to Jack Point and Biggs Park, the first stop in
my series of favourite walks.
The moment we parked at the end of Jackson Road, I knew it was going to be a good
day. The weather was amazing—the sun was shining and I
didn’t even need my puffer jacket!
Getting into the park is part of the fun. You walk through a tunnel before emerging onto
a trail that winds through the woods and along the shoreline. There are soft chip trails,
boardwalks and a few sets of stairs along the way, with something new around almost
every corner.
One important thing before we go any farther: this isn’t an off-leash park, so those of
us with four legs need to stay attached to our humans. That’s okay. There are so many
good smells along this trail that I can keep mine quite busy.
And apparently there’s plenty for humans to look at too.
On this particular walk, mine spotted a bald eagle soaring overhead and sea lions
swimming around the point. I kept my ears perked just in case something else decided
to make an appearance. Harbour porpoises are sometimes spotted here too.
The approximately 2.5-kilometre loop out toward Jack Point has some spectacular
views. Along the way you can look across the Nanaimo River estuary toward downtown
Nanaimo, Protection Island and Gabriola Island.
Of course, while my human was admiring the scenery, I was investigating the
considerably more interesting smells along the trail.
Jack Point has a bit of history behind its name as well. Named after Jack Doholt, a
farmer who lived here more than a century ago. The point was once separated from the
mainland at high tide but is now connected to Duke Point and Biggs Park.
This is also a beautiful place to catch a sunset. Just remember that if you walk out for
sunset, you still have to get back—and apparently humans don’t see particularly well in
the dark. Bring a flashlight.
One last practical tip from an experienced trail dog: park at 655 Jackson Road, rather
than along Duke Point Highway.
So if you’re looking for a walk with forest trails, ocean views, wildlife and plenty of fresh
sea air, Jack Point and Biggs Park is well worth exploring.
Heikos verdict? Four paws up.
And for the record, staying on leash didn’t spoil the adventure one bit.
Until next time, keep sniffing out the trails!
Heiko
